Activity TWENTY FOUR--->MOVING MASSES

PROCEDURES

1. Determine the mass of the balls in grams(g) using the spring scale.

2. Place both balls at the edge of a smooth, flat table..

3.With a hardcover book, give the balls a quick push of the same strength toward the opposite edge of the table.

4. Carefully compare the acceleration of the balls

5. RECORD the DATA and OBSERVATION .

MATERIALS

EXTENDED ACTIVITY

We wanted to know which of the masses, the WOOD ball or the STEEL ball, would hit the floor FIRST if we pushed them off of the table at EXACTLY THE SAME TIME.

We discovered that they hit the floor at the same time.....

WHAT ?

HERE'S WHY---->The two balls hit the ground at the same time and were dropped from the same height. Thus, they accelerated at the same rate.

Here is how this is explained in terms of Newton’s second law:
Because a = F/m, the acceleration (a) is the same for each ball and the mass (m) of each ball is different, the force (F) acting on each ball must be different. For the ball with greater mass (m), the force (F) must be greater for acceleration to be equal to that of the less massive ball. Based on previous experiments, we know that the ball with more mass will experience a greater gravitational force because the magnitude of the gravitational force is directly proportional to the mass of the ball.
